Policy

Last updated: January 2025. This policy explains how SaferCiti collects, uses, stores, and protects your personal information in compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) and applicable international data protection law.

1. Who We Are

SaferCiti is a security intelligence platform operated in Nigeria. References to "SaferCiti", "we", "us", or "our" in this policy refer to the SaferCiti platform and its operators. Our data contact is [email protected].

2. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly and information generated by your use of the app:

  • Account information: Name, email address, phone number, and password when you register.
  • Location data: Your approximate or precise location, used to deliver relevant incident alerts. You control location sharing permissions at all times via your device settings.
  • Incident reports: Content, photos, and location data you submit when reporting incidents or missing persons.
  • Usage data: How you interact with the app โ€” screens viewed, features used, search queries โ€” to improve the platform.
  • Device data: Device type, operating system, and app version for troubleshooting and compatibility.
  • Payment data: Subscription payments are processed by Paystack and Stripe. SaferCiti does not store card details.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To deliver real-time security alerts relevant to your location and preferences
  • To verify and process incident and missing persons reports
  • To manage your account and subscription
  • To improve the accuracy of our AI verification system
  • To communicate service updates, safety alerts, and changes to this policy
  • To comply with Nigerian law and respond to lawful requests from authorities

4. Location Data

SaferCiti requires approximate location access to function effectively. We use your location to show relevant incidents, score route safety, and trigger proximity alerts. Precise, continuous location tracking is only active when you explicitly enable it or use navigation features. You may revoke location permissions at any time in your device settings, though this will limit app functionality.

Location data is not sold or shared with third-party advertisers. It may be shared with emergency services if you activate SOS.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only in the following circumstances:

  • With service providers who operate under strict data processing agreements (cloud hosting, analytics, payment processing)
  • With Nigerian security authorities when required by law or to prevent imminent harm
  • In aggregated, anonymised form for research and public safety reporting
  • With your explicit consent for any other purpose

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active plus 12 months. Incident reports you submit are retained as part of the public safety record but are anonymised after 24 months. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting [email protected].

7. Your Rights

Under the NDPR and applicable law, you have the right to: access your personal data; correct inaccurate data; request deletion; withdraw consent; and lodge a complaint with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

8. Security

We use industry-standard encryption (TLS in transit, AES-256 at rest), role-based access controls, and regular security audits to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure โ€” if you discover a vulnerability, please report it to [email protected].

9. Children

SaferCiti is not intended for users under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us immediately.

10. Changes to This Policy

We will notify you of material changes via in-app notification and email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
